Motorcycle Accidents
The NHTSA's 2008 Traffic Safety study found that motorcyclists are roughly 37 times more likely to die in a traffic accident as compared to passenger car occupants.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 5,290
motorcyclists were killed in 2008, and 96,000 were injured. Florida alone reported
more than 550 motorcycle fatalities in 2008, meaning that roughly 10 percent
of all deaths occurred in the state.
The NHTSA’s Traffic Safety study found that motorcyclists are about 37 times more likely to die in a traffic accident, and 0.7 times the more likely to be injured as compared to passenger car occupants. These facts underline how important it is for all motorcyclists to have the proper type and amount of insurance coverage in the event of an accident.
In the State of Florida, all motor vehicle drivers are required by law to purchase and retain general Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. This type of auto insurance is no-fault, meaning that it will pay for at least a portion of your medical bills without regard to who was at fault. Contrary to assumption, automobile PIP insurance generally does not cover motorcycle riders.
As a motorcyclist, you must purchase and retain specialized motorcycle PIP insurance to ensure that you are covered in the event of an accident. Because of the confusing and complex nature of motorcycle insurance laws, many motorcycle-related accident victims lack the proper coverage. Oftentimes this results in the victim having to pay for their medical expenses out of pocket.
